I spent over 10 years trapped in anterior pelvic tilt.

It all started when I was 16 after a serious back injury I got from an ocean wave driving my knees into the sand and the current smashing me in the low back.

My doctor gave me vicodin and told me to rest. After a year, I was no better.

An acupuncturist told me to relax my belly muscles all the time.

So I did, but it didn’t help. I was still facing a lot of pain and discomfort.

Then, to make things worse, I ended up with a shoulder injury from snowboarding.

I tried countless sessions with different physical therapists and health professionals over the years who were also unable to help me.

And I would end up spending $50 to $150 bucks a time, for a massage, physiotherapist, or chiro session, getting some pain relief, only to go back to feeling exactly the same a few days later (sometimes within a few hours).


Fast forward a few years, I was living alone in a tiny studio apartment in Japan teaching English.

I was constantly sitting at a desk and in the evenings I spent most of my time on a computer.

I was trying to figure out how to sit at the computer so my right shoulder wouldn’t hurt.

And although I didn’t realize it at the time, that’s when I started sitting with BIG time anterior tilt.

I cranked my lower back into extension as much as I could. This made my shoulder feel better and seemed to match the idea of “sitting up straight.”

So I doubled down on this sitting technique for a long while…

Fast forward another couple of years when I was studying to become a postural massage therapist, and some of the posture experts I was learning from were telling me the SAME thing I’d heard before…

Eventually, I ended up with hip pain, reduced hip range of motion, weak knees, feet, and ankles.

So then I started lifting weights and doing everything I’d been told by the health professionals.

I still felt like crap…

It was only after years of training and gaining my own qualifications as a personal trainer and spending hundreds of hours with clients…

That I finally realized that I was actually training my body to be stiff and locked in an anterior pelvic tilt.

What the heck is anterior pelvic tilt? 

Before we get started, let’s make sure you know what anterior tilt is.

Think of your pelvis as a bowl.

There’s a front of the bowl and a back of the bowl.

When the front of the bowl is tipping lower than the back, the contents spill forward.

The front of your pelvis (pubic bone) is the front of the bowl. Your butt is the back of the bowl.

When you are in anterior tilt, your lower spine is also stuck in a curve in a specific direction.

This direction is called “extension.”

How do I know if I have anterior pelvic tilt?

Most people go undiagnosed their whole lives, not knowing why they’re in constant pain….

But you can know in just 2 minutes. Here’s a simple test:

  1. Lie on the floor face up.

  2. Bend your knees so the soles of your feet are on the floor.

  3. You should feel a small gap between your lower spine and the floor. That's normal.

  4. If you've got good pelvic control, you should be able to flatten your low back to the floor.

  5. If you're stuck in anterior tilt, you'll feel a huge gap between your low back and the floor. When you try to flatten your low back, you'll find it hard or impossible.

  6. When standing, from the side view, you'll see that you have a big arch in your low back that your tail/butt sticks out (check out the images below for an example).

Anterior Tilt isn't some grave medical condition...

It's about teaching muscles to position your bones a certain way.

Your goal is to be able to achieve all these positions when and where you need them.

Some of the most common symptoms of APT are back pain, stiffness, and a limited range of hip motion...

Being stuck in anterior tilt can make your lower back feel stiff and fragile all the time because it’s stuck in extension all day.

It can also give you sharp pains as your body warns you that you’re at the end of your range of motion. 

For example, if you’re already in extension and you try to do a backbend or cobra pose FURTHER into extension, you’ll soon know about it!

Anterior tilt can also make your hips LESS mobile. The muscles that keep you in anterior tilt aren’t able to function properly. By definition, this reduces your hip range of motion.

Finally, depending on your anatomy, anterior tilt may make it impossible to achieve certain movements as your thigh bone runs into your pelvis.

Can I fix anterior tilt of my pelvis?

Yes. The position of your pelvis, spine, and leg bones is the result of muscle activity. If your muscles are trained to hold you in anterior tilt, that’s what they’ll do.

If they are not trained to get you out of anterior tilt, you’ll be stuck.

Teach your muscles how to activate and work in new positions, and you’ll be able to achieve anterior, neutral, AND posterior tilt.

Can exercises designed to fix anterior tilt actually work? Isn't it a bone problem?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about anterior tilt. Chiropractors, doctors, and physical therapists will say that anterior tilt is a "bone problem". Sometimes they say it CAN’T be fixed.

When someone says that anterior tilt is a bone problem that can’t be fixed, it only means that they don’t know how to fix anterior tilt and/or that they've never given the topic serious thought.

"You need another adjustment to your spine."

There are two BIG problems with this very common approach.

Here are some of the reasons I discovered why they can’t help you…

  • Going to a random personal trainer in your local area is a risky gamble. Because if they were trained by any standard textbook approach, they'll only have half the answer...
  • And if they learned from some fitness guru's training, they'll have an answer that likely only applies to a small segment of the population...
  • MDs have close to zero musculoskeletal anatomy knowledge and will usually avoid giving much advice besides "live with it”...
  • Yoga instructors are often trained to teach you exercises that put you in MORE anterior tilt...
  • And chiros, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, and massage guys are simply pushing a revolving door strategy. They will happily continue taking your money as long as you let them...

 

The worst bit is, most of these so-called health professionals don't actually understand how muscles work together.

Many of them have an outdated and oversimplified understanding of the muscles involved.

So you end up spending thousands of dollars, only to get some short-term pain relief, and you’ll rarely get to the root cause of the problem…

If there weren’t gaps in their approach, wouldn’t they have helped you to prevent it once and for all? 

For a long time, I kept asking myself the same question…

If these health professionals are so good at what they do, and they’re the only people qualified to help me, why don’t they show me how to fix it? 

It’s like they’re selling you a treasure map but they don’t realize it’s missing a few pieces…  

They lure you in with the promise of gold, glory, and treasure… 

But without those other pieces of the map, you’ll never get the gold...

The truth is, as much as they might want to help you, none of these experts can really show you how to solve it.

HOW IT WORKS

THE PROGRAM IS BROKEN INTO 3 PHASES

Phase 0 (Week 1)

The primary goal here is to take a few days to learn all the exercises. We recommend you go through the 2 training plans you’ll be using for the program at least once.

Phase 1 (Weeks 2-5)

In this phase, your focus is on perfecting your form on each and every exercise.  It’s less about the intensity or being able to hit all the sets and reps, and more about building great form.

Phase 2 ( Weeks 6-9)

The next phase involves taking your observations from the first phase and adjusting the difficulty of your exercises. 

You’ll feel like you're starting to master some of the exercises by now, and that means you can start to bump up the difficulty a notch.
