It’s up to you to heal

Have you ever heard an alternative health practitioner tell you that they are helping you unlock your potential to heal yourself, only to find out after seeing them fifteen times that they actually don’t know how to help you heal yourself?

The sad reality these days is that a lot of medical training, while great for saving lives, is pretty bad about helping you solve your musculoskeletal pain. Imagine being a doctor with 15 minutes per patient maximum — it’s just not enough time to figure out how to help your patient!

The even sadder reality is that a lot of alternative health practitioners are very happy to tell you that you can heal yourself without giving you the tools you need to heal and stay healthy (although many will try to sell you special vitamins, herbs, and teas!) and often for two simple reasons:

  1. They don’t know what to teach you!
  2. Teaching you would be bad for their bottom line!

If you’re a massage therapist depending on clients to come back week after week to relieve neck tension, are you going to show your clients how to end neck tension forever? You might, but only if you don’t want your clients to come back to get their neck tension treated!

It’s important to remember that when you go to get something like musculoskeletal pain addressed that you have an end-game in mind. Doctors may not have the time to show you everything you need to do to keep your body moving right, but at least they’ll try to make sure you aren’t coming back in the door every week (even if it means being dismissive or referring you out).  It took me years and years and years to find a practitioner like that, but it — with no exagerration — changed my life forever!
