How to get a good night’s sleep

cat sleeping wellIf you’ve ever woken up feeling less rested than when you went to bed, this is a little experiment I did with myself in 2012. I most certainly did not invent this idea as I have seen plenty of iterations on it from many sources. I’m just going to keep it really simple.

Here are a couple reasons why you might want to try this:

1) You’ll be in a better mood if this works for you, and that makes it a lot easier to be productive in the day.

2) You’ll have much more stable moods through the day, so you won’t be feeling ready to kill someone by 10AM.

3) You’ll have more energy to be active before or after work (whichever is your pleasure).

Here are the rules for the magic experiment I very successfully ran for myself.

DON’T LOOK AT YOUR COMPUTER, PHONE, OR TV for at least one hour before bed time.

I know that sounds ridiculous. I know that for many of us, Netflix, cable TV, or emails are often the last loved ones we see before drifting off to sleep, but for the sake of your sleep, knock it off!

I try to keep true to this on a daily basis, but am only successful most of the time (I’m only human), but on the series of days that I am successful, the results are undeniable. TV shows (dramas especially) are written to get you wired up and emotionally engaged in the fantasy. Emails get you thinking about all kinds of things you have to do and get done. Let yourself¬†fully¬†relax before bed: turn off the electronics, grab a book, and let your mind slowly wind down for the day.
