Following scoliosis surgery, Audrey developed debilitating headaches. Massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic didn’t seem to help. After learning how realign her body and work hidden tightness out of her body, she beat the headaches and got back to playing guitar and enjoying her life.
I can’t tell you how grateful I am to have found Matt and Upright Health. Seriously.
I had a severe case of scoliosis and in 2001 went through a major surgery to fix it, complete with some screws and two metal rods. However, around 2007 I developed chronic tension headaches that I couldn’t get rid of. I tried acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic treatment, and while sometimes they helped minimally, none of those things had lasting effects. I resorted to taking painkillers more often than I wanted to, and sometimes even those didn’t help.
My headaches were completely affecting my quality of life. I couldn’t think straight and wasn’t able to do much. After years of headaches, that dazed state of being became normal to me. My husband begged me to keep searching for a solution since my headaches were affecting both of our lives, but I felt so defeated from years of trying all of the treatments I mentioned above, and I had really lost all hope that I would ever be free from headaches.
Eventually in 2012 my husband convinced me to try physical therapy, so I searched online for recommendations. As I read how many of the treatments were localized to the problem area something about that just didn’t feel compelling. Somehow I stumbled onto Upright Health, caught by the words “postural alignment therapy.” I knew that was exactly what I needed to try. Something in my gut told me that my tension headaches were more than just tension in my shoulder, and that my entire body was connected to it.
Though I was hesitant because the other treatments I had tried didn’t work, my husband convinced me to go for it. After all, I was just going in for a free consultation. I told Matt about my scoliosis and my headaches and he said he could help. He showed me pictures of how poorly aligned my body was–and it’s not just about posture the way we tend to think of it. It’s about everything–your whole body–being in proper alignment. (Go see Matt and figure out what I’m really talking about.) My body had been compensating improperly from my scoliosis surgery, but also simply from ways I sat or stood or slept during the day, causing the wrong muscles to carry the wrong loads and pulling my body out of alignment. But I was still skeptical, so I looked him in the eye and said, “Look, I know you need to say this stuff works because this is your business, but tell me honestly, how confident are you that this is going to help me?” He looked me back dead in the eye and said, “I’m extremely confident.” And to my slight embarrassment I cried right there in his office. Haha!
Anyway, I’m overjoyed to say that after just a few times with Matt my chronic headaches were NOT a problem! I had months more of treatments to go with Matt to work on my alignment because my body was so jacked up, but even today, over a year after my first appointment with Matt, I’m STILL not plagued by chronic tension headaches!
Through rolfing (painful, but honestly it feels awesome), stretches, and very, very, very simple exercises that Matt gave me to do my body feels so much better! Postural alignment therapy hasn’t just taken care of my headaches, but it’s taken care of my entire body! And the best thing is that I can do these by myself to maintain my alignment. I don’t have to keep paying for chiropractic treatment, massages, or acupuncture.
So often my friends tell me about slight pain in their backs or in their feet or hips. They might not have scoliosis or have had a major surgery or have chronic tension headaches and a chronic cloudy state of being, but they’ve definitely settled thinking “Ehh, I’m just getting older, that’s all,” and not doing anything about it. I KNOW postural alignment therapy and Upright Health would improve their quality of life SO MUCH.
Matt is awesome! Do NOT hesitate to meet with him! Take a chance. The only thing you have to lose is your pain. 🙂
