Are you driving your foot wonky?

In San Diego, driving is a necessity. Natives know that the “North American Outstanding Public Transportation System of Year” award  given to the MTS is little more than a joke to anyone who needs to traverse four miles in under an hour. Well — guess what — it also  has an effect on your posture!

Next time you’re walking around Fashion Valley or Horton Square, take a look at all the people walking around.  Watch the right foot on everyone. You’ll probably notice a curious trend.

A lot of people have a right foot that points out to the side relative to the knee, to the hip, and to the direction they’re actually walking.

And for a lot of people, it has to do with, you guessed it, driving.

Next time you get in the car, take a look at how your foot rests on the gas pedal. If you’re like most people, you’ll notice that you tend to rest the heel of your right foot to the left of the gas pedal, and then you twist your foot sideways at the ankle to reach the gas pedal. When you press the pedal, you don’t move your heel at all. You just keep your ankle twisted and your foot moving up and down.

Now multiply that for all the many hours you spend in your car every day, and — you see where this is headed? — you end up with a foot that’s really good at always pointing out to the side!

If you want to stop this in its tracks, the fix is simple: move your heel directly under the gas pedal!  Some cars make this harder than others, but if you can, get your heel under the gas pedal so that your foot no longer has to wander off to the side just to do its job!
