Shoulder pain can make life miserable. I understand because I've been there myself.

I’m Matt Hsu, and I’m the founder of Upright Health. My team and I made this program to help you solve your shoulder problems YOURSELF.

Since 2007, I’ve been working with hundreds of clients with shoulder, hip, back, and knee issues and the muscular problems that underlie them...

I’ve helped countless people overcome shoulder pain that was blamed on rotator cuff tears, arthritis, nerve problems, labral tears, and bony impingement.

For most people, within a few months’ time they could get back to enjoying their lives... all while avoiding pills, shots, and surgery and their side effects.

I'm not a witch or wizard, and I'm not saying it's always easy to do this!

Getting rid of shoulder pain is a process that takes time. It's a process that I understand because I've had tons of issues with my own shoulders and because I've helped so many others with their problems.

Matt Hsu orthopedic personal trainer, rolfer, posture specialist

CEO of Quora.com and former Chief Technology Officer of Facebook

A friend referred me to Upright Health because my left shoulder was in a constant spasm and the fingers of my left hand were going numb. MRIs had indicated I had cervical spine pathology, and three different doctors I consulted with expected that surgery would be the only solution and there was not much else I could do...

....In the first session with Matt, there was an obvious improvement in my hand and neck symptoms. After a month or two I was feeling very good and no longer suffered the distraction of pain and numbness during my busy workdays.

How did my own shoulder problems start?

I hurt my right shoulder while snowboarding...

I didn’t dislocate my shoulder in some heroic effort to land a backside 720.

I was actually just going off the lip of a half pipe. As I lost contact with the lip of the half pipe, I twisted my body to initiate the spin. My arms were outstretched.

As I twisted, I felt and heard a clunk in my right shoulder. The humerus (the upper arm bone) shifted, and I gagged from the pain. I fell face down into the snow and cursed. My shoulder, back, and arm all burned in a way I had never experienced before.

That was the beginning of years of shoulder problems.

I experienced the frustration of trying to heal a stubborn shoulder problem.

I tried massage.

I tried physical therapy.

I tried acupuncture.

I tried chiropractic.

I spent countless hours struggling with my shoulder. Multiple trips to the doctor, to physical therapy, various anti-inflammatories, and a bunch of wasted hours on ineffective exercises gave me no results.

Weeks turned into months. I just couldn't do any of the things that I wanted to do. Doctors told me to just rest. I rested and rested and rested. Within 1 year, my hands, wrists, and elbows were hurting too!

Months turned into years. I visited massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. From time to time, I’d get a few hours of relief. My shoulder would feel a little better for a while, but as soon as I went back to the computer or went back to trying to play hockey, the shoulder would feel sloppy and unstable. It felt like the ball just wasn’t in the right place in the socket.

Even if the acupuncturist or massage therapist could get it to feel right, within hours I’d be back at square one. The aching would return. The popping would be there. The sense that my arm was just dangling kept coming back.

Sleeping on my side was out of the question, as the shoulder would give me a sharp pain deep in the socket along with a nauseating feeling of something being loose and clunky in the joint.

I learned that there are a lot of problems with the conventional approach to shoulder pain.

It’s unfortunately quite common for people to feel like what they have done in physical therapy, chiropractic, or massage wasn’t particularly helpful. Unfortunately, a lot of times, conventional approaches to shoulder problems are based on avoidance. Everyone's REALLY afraid to hurt you more!

Of course you don't want to get hurt more...so they tell you to NOT MOVE until pain goes away.  But if you're like me, you've found rest, rest, rest to be a really frustrating and fruitless approach.

A note about rest and shoulder pain...

It's a common misconception that rest will heal pain. Sometimes rest does help, but when months and years of rest don't lead to better function and less pain, it's time to start moving!

Historically, people with back pain were told to just rest in bed wait for the back pain to go away. It took decades for the recommendations to change, but now doctors suggest moving to make sure your back muscles don't get stiff and weak!

It's no different with shoulders. The only way to improve your ability to move is to move!

When it is time to move, conventional approaches to shoulder issues are often focused on doing the wrong things to the wrong parts of the shoulder - or they do it in a way that just doesn't target things properly!

If you take a look at many shoulder rehab protocols from reputable sources, you’ll find what I found: a lot of the exercises don’t feel good in the short term and don’t seem to do much in the long term.

This Pendulum exercise, for example, is one that seems to appear in nearly all physical therapy protocols for shoulder pain. I remember being told to do this exercise to help my shoulder.

It didn’t feel good then, and it didn’t do any good. It's not that I was not a good patient. It's not that I didn't do it.

It's just that this exercise was actually making things less stable for me! My shoulder felt WORSE doing it.

Many programs also completely neglect the importance of the posture and alignment of the entire body - something that practically guarantees more shoulder pain in the long term.

Some programs do pay attention to postural issues, but then they often approach the postural issues with ineffective exercises.

Take this exercise for example. The idea behind an exercise like this is to “fix” your posture, but this doesn’t actually fix your posture! It completely misses the right muscles and can actually put your spine into a worse position and make your shoulders feel worse!

Maybe you're thinking surgery is the only way out of your problem.

I had this same concern for a long time.  I've worked with a lot of clients with this same concern.

It makes sense to be concerned about this. When everyone else tells you that your shoulder will get better on its own and it doesn't, you get really anxious.  When everyone says that pain in your shoulder is a sure sign that you need to get surgery, it's really easy to start thinking you need surgery!

I'm not a doctor, and I can't tell you with 100% certainty that YOU don't need surgery (some people MIGHT)...but I can share some stories and ideas that you may find very encouraging.

POINT #1: This guy was told he needed to have surgery for his shoulder and neck problems by different three doctors.

You saw an abbreviated version of Adam's story earlier, and I want to make sure you see the full story.

A friend referred me to Upright Health because my left shoulder was in a constant spasm and the fingers of my left hand were going numb. MRIs had indicated I had cervical spine pathology, and three different doctors I consulted with expected that surgery would be the only solution and there was not much else I could do.

Matt listened to the information the doctors had given me, understood my concerns, and presented me with a very different perspective from what I had already heard. What was most notable was that he had clearly already considered the other perspectives on my issues and had very well-reasoned notions about why the traditional perspectives may have arisen and how they may be misleading.

In the first session with Matt, there was an obvious improvement in my hand and neck symptoms. After a month or two I was feeling very good and no longer suffered the distraction of pain and numbness during my busy workdays.

I’ve been training with Matt since early 2016, and my neck and hand barely ever bother me anymore. This frees me to focus my mental energy on my work without worrying about whether my body is going to be the limiter in the productivity or enjoyment of any given day or week!

Adam's no slouch. He's the co-founder of Quora.com and was the former Chief Technology Officer of Facebook. He has access to some of the best medical minds.

Three doctors told him his only solution was surgery.

After a couple months, he had his shoulder and neck troubles under control using the same techniques and principles you'll find in the Shoulder Fix.

POINT #2: X-rays and MRIs can't reliably tell you what's causing your pain.

Those X-rays and MRIs can be really, really scary. When a doctor tells you that what you see in an X-ray is causing your problems, it can be pretty frightening.

But when you look into studies on X-rays and MRIs for shoulder issues, you find that there is almost no correlation between labral tears, bone shapes, rotator cuff tears, arthritis, and actual symptoms.

And when you look at real cases of shoulder pain, you find that the MRIs don't tell you the full picture (check out the video for a striking example!).

Over the years, it has become common belief that rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and misshapen bones in the shoulder are the primary causes of shoulder pain...but a relentless line of recent, peer-reviewed medical literature has been regularly showing that this belief is unlikely to be accurate!

POINT #3: Shoulder surgery is not a surefire solution to shoulder pain.

Early studies on orthopedic surgeries always paint a rosy picture. Once the surgeries are compared to other treatments, the results are not as great.

Spinal fusions and knee meniscus surgeries are big examples of this.  The truth is sometimes surgery does seem to be helpful. But sometimes it doesn't help at all, and sometimes it can actually make things worse. How do you know which way things will go for you?

Recent studies are starting to point out how hard it is to predict who will get better with surgery - and that exercise can be just as effective as surgery!

Many times I considered going to a doctor to get surgery. But two things stopped me from doing that.

First, the American health care system was extremely expensive at the time (and still is at the time of writing), and I didn’t have insurance that would do much to help cover the cost of surgery.

The second problem was that I had trouble believing the surgery was going to fix me.

I knew a guy from my hockey team who had a bum shoulder. He had slammed into the boards multiple times over his career, and his shoulder was pretty unstable as a result. He was told a rotator cuff repair was his best option, so he went for it.

By the time I was thinking about surgery, he’d already undergone four revisions on that shoulder, and his shoulder still wasn't stable, secure, and healthy.

I also had another friend from high school who had some shoulder issues. He went in for shoulder surgery. When all was said and done, he could not externally rotate at the shoulder joint. While his shoulder was more stable in general, he couldn't move his arm through a full range of motion anymore.

Surgery didn't seem to be a good bet, so I kept searching for answers.

  • You've tried resting, resting, and resting...and it's not helping.
  • You've been told that doing the same 10 really easy shoulder exercises for an hour a day for the rest of your life is your only solution, and you don't think that makes sense.
  • You feel like the therapist or trainer you're working with has run out of ideas, doesn't pay attention, or just doesn't know what to do with you!
  • You've been told moving your shoulder is bad for you (and you don't believe it).
  • You've been told surgery is going to solve your problems (and you really don't want to go that route).
  • You had surgery a while ago, and you still don't feel like you have good shoulder mobility.
  • You are motivated to learn how to take care of your shoulders so you can get back to working out, spending time with family, and going to movies without your shoulder bugging you the whole time.

  • You were just in a traumatic incident (car crash, major sports injury, etc.) in the last few weeks and can barely move the shoulder.
  • You're fresh off a surgery and haven't yet gotten information from your doctor or therapist about what you're allowed to do.
  • You don't have the motivation to learn about how your shoulder works.
  • You don't learn well on your own  and know you will learn better with direct one-on-one coaching (don't feel bad - we're all different!).

The Shoulder Fix can help with many different shoulder pain problems.

Shoulder pain gets blamed on a lot of things:

  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Rotator Cuff Tears
  • Labral Tears
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Arthritis

These diagnoses can get you feeling really anxious.

If you've got symptoms of any of these things, The Shoulder Fix can still help you retrain your shoulders for less pain, more comfort, and higher quality of life.

The secret to the Shoulder Fix is that it's designed to help you make principled decisions. That way you gradually improve your functional range of motion AND you don't hurt yourself doing exercises that strengthen or stretch the wrong muscles!

Focus on the muscles - not the diagnosis!

Medical approaches often focus on "what's broken?" Medical investigation and treatment focuses on finding all the broken things and numbing them or "fixing" them. But, like we've seen, the X-rays and MRIs don't actually mean much! So you end up "fixing" the wrong stuff!

The Shoulder Fix focuses on the neglected part of the whole process: retraining muscles carefully and consistently.

Tissue Work

Massage away chronic stiffness in muscles that mess with shoulder function.

Teach muscles how to handle new positions so you get full range of motion.

Give your muscles a chance to move the shoulder joint comfortably and through your full range of motion.

By sequencing the work you do with your own body, the Shoulder Fix helps you build a strong foundation for great shoulder function - for life!

Cinna Software Engineer

"Three years ago, I started working at my first desk job as an engineer.

Two years into the job, I started to experience a lot of shoulder and hip pain. For months, I tried everything I could think of – ergonomic evaluations, multiple physical therapists, medications, chiropractor, acupuncture, deep tissue massages – but nothing helped alleviate the pain.

I was in constant pain, and my range of motion was severely limited. I had trouble driving, sleeping, and working. At one point, I seriously considered quitting my job and doing a complete career change which did not involve sitting or computers.

After nearly 10 months of trying everything, my friend recommended Upright Health, and after the first session with Matt, I felt a noticeable difference. The pain was not gone, but I felt better than I had in months...

After 4 months of training, the pain was 95% gone, and I have been able to continue working at my job with no problems. My life has drastically improved."

Will this program work on my phone or other device?

Is there a hard copy available?

Frank Retiree, the Netherlands

Living with a shoulder that irritates day and night gets very frustrating.

After 15 years of all kinds of medical investigations and treatments... I had given up hope that someone or something could relieve me from that awful and nagging pain which also included an electric sensation from my neck to my shoulder and down to my fingertips.

My newly working shoulder gives me renewed energy and desire to pick up sports after such a long time of being unable to be active.

Above all, I enjoy having a good night’s rest.

Thanks so much!"

The Shoulder Fix isn't a quick fix. It's a long term solution.

If you're like me, you've spent a lot of money already on a lot of different ways to fix your shoulder problem. Spending lots of time and money and getting little results is probably one of the most frustrating parts of dealing with shoulder pain. You get a quick fix, and then the problem comes back.

Then you're left wondering why things are going wrong over and over again!

Here's the reality: it's rare to find an amazing quick fix that lasts. You really need to know how to maintain good shoulder health for the rest of your life!

Your shoulders will feel their best when they are performing at their best!

They cannot perform at their best unless you TRAIN them to be their best!

The Shoulder Fix keeps your shoulders and your wallet healthy.

Looking back, I spent several thousand dollars over ten years trying to get my shoulder to feel better. Every time I would get just a small taste of shoulder freedom, I'd lose it within a few hours or days! I'd get relief, then it'd disappear. I'd get relief...and it would disappear. It was an endless cycle; I wanted to learn how to keep my shoulder healthy MYSELF!

Each appointment was an average of $75. Sometimes I paid a lot more...sometimes I paid a lot less. I just wanted to get my shoulder feeling right!

I've been working with people with shoulder issues for years now. When I work with clients in-person, I'm usually working with them over the course of a few months. The very first session with me is a couple hundred dollars, which I know is out of a lot of people's price range.

Even if you find a trainer or therapist with a lower rate who can help you, you're still looking at a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars.

And then there's the costs of surgery - all the pre- and post-op visits, plus physical therapy. In the U.S., the costs can add up to absurdly high numbers!

Trainer or Therapist

$50-$250 / session ... around $1000-$5000 total

  • Personalized and progressively challenging
  • Best opportunity to get individualized attention
  • Highly dependent on the professional you're working with and your adherence!
  • Won't work 100% of the time for everyone...and the money is nonrefundable

$500 - $20000 depending on the procedure, doctor, insurance, etc.

  • Most often covered by insurance
  • Pro athletes appear to get good results
  • If it fails or introduces more problems (like loss of range of motion or more pain), there's no "undo" button
  • Won't work even close to 100% of the time, generally still requires lots of exercise afterwards for rehab...and the money is nonrefundable if it doesn't work

The Shoulder Fix

  • Personalized and progressively challenging
  • Principle-based programming so you can adjust based on your needs
  • Designed to help people who have no experience with exercise as well as those who are well-versed in exercise principles.
  • Highly dependent on your adherence and consistency
  • Won't work 100% of the time for everyone (but the money is refundable so you can try all the other approaches!)

------AFTER ONE WEEK-----

I identified posture as an opportunity for a lifestyle change. I spend a good amount of time at a desk and definitely notice that my shoulders slouch. I have been actively engaged in improving my posture and performing periodic scapular retractions throughout the workday. Many exercises in the Shoulder Fix (at least in weeks 1-3) can be done around the office which is great...

When I first started the program just one week ago, I felt a disturbing internal motion in my injured left shoulder, kind of like a grinding. At this point, the grinding sensation is much reduced...

...I also feel significant improvement in endurance with the arm circle exercises. In tonight’s session I experimented with holding light weight-bags in each hand as I did the circles.

Another positive change is in sleep position. Going into the program, I avoided sleeping on my left shoulder. At this point, it is much improved and I can lay on my left side longer before it becomes uncomfortable.

------AFTER 4 MONTHS----

I’ve been utilizing the tools in the Shoulder Fix for a few months now and I’m back to swimming my normal 5 days/week. That’s really exciting and was frankly unthinkable when I first had the injury!

The Shoulder Fix workbook is included as a PDF download to help you get started right away!

Kevin, CEO

As a former college athlete and current overstressed CEO of a construction company, my shoulders and hips were so out of whack that normal day to day activities were a challenge. My feet did not point in the same direction and I could barely pull my seat belt down in my car because my shoulder was so knotted up. Running was out of the question and my right shoulder would not let me do a number of overhead lifts. However, with no glaring acute injuries, I was prescribed mild physical therapy to address my issues.

Matt and the Upright Health team worked with me to identify where my body was unbalanced and out of line and then developed a custom plan of therapeutic massage, stretching and strength training that targeted my exact needs.

My time at Upright Health has brought me levels of comfort and mobility that I have not had in years. I can’t thank Matt and his team enough.

Dr. Pam

So, briefly about myself, I am a 60 year old physician, and if I can’t fix myself with non acute musculoskeletal issues, I don’t usually go to the doctor. I’ve been lucky enough to have sought out massage therapy, chiropractic treatment, and have gotten involved on my own with yoga, Alexander technique, and the Egoscue method.

My X-ray shows calcium deposits in my right shoulder, and I probably have tendinitis/ bursitis from an allopathic doctor’s point of view, but what I do with the position of my joints – taking care of relationships of joints and muscles and fascia – is what gives me the most benefit.

In the Shoulder Fix, I find the bent over arm circles to be very beneficial. And in starting the recalibration/strengthening section, I am starting with no weight/resistance, just to get used to the movements and do with correct form, and not hurt anything. Unfortunately, that has happened in the past with other exercise programs.

Unfortunately like a lot of others, I am “too busy,” sit too much, am on the computer for eight hours a day at work…

But, in summary, when I can do the tissue work, stretches, and exercises regularly from the Shoulder Fix, I am fine!

Thanks for the program you have created!

Get pain-free, healthy shoulders without spending thousands of dollars with the proven Shoulder Fix program now!
