I’m Matt Hsu, and I’m the founder of Upright Health. My team and I have created a program that has helped professional athletes, doctors, and other people suffering from chronic shoulder pain …wake up and stay PAIN FREE. This program is designed to be straightforward and easy enough to do in your own living room.
Since 2007, I’ve helped thousands of people overcome their stubborn, frustrating pain problems....Pain that was blamed on rotator cuff tears, arthritis, nerve problems, labral tears, and bony impingement.
For most, it only took a few months before they were back to enjoying their healthy pain-free lives... all while avoiding pills, shots, and surgery and their side effects.
I'm not a witch or wizard, and I'm not saying it's always easy to do this!
Getting rid of shoulder pain takes time. It's a process that I understand because I've had endless problems with my own shoulders and because I've helped so many others with their pain.
CEO of Quora.com and former Chief Technology Officer of Facebook
"A friend referred me to Upright Health because my left shoulder was in a constant spasm and the fingers of my left hand were going numb. MRIs had indicated I had cervical spine pathology, and three different doctors I consulted with expected that surgery would be the only solution and there was not much else I could do...
....In the first session with Matt, there was an obvious improvement in my hand and neck symptoms. After a month or two I was feeling very good and no longer suffered the distraction of pain and numbness during my busy workdays."
I hurt my right shoulder while snowboarding...
I’d love to say it was from doing backflips in front of a cheering crowd.
I’d love to say I went out in a blaze of glory.
But the reality was…much more embarrassing.
I was actually just going off the lip of a half pipe. As my momentum carried me into the air, I twisted my body to initiate the spin. My arms were outstretched.
As I twisted, I felt and heard a clunk in my right shoulder. The humerus (the upper arm bone) shifted, and I gagged from the pain. I immediately lost control and then landed, painfully, face first into the snow. The pain in my shoulder was excruciating. My shoulder, back, and arm all burned in a way I had never experienced before…and never hope to repeat.
That was the beginning of years of shoulder problems.

The worst part was…nothing seemed to work.
- I tried massage.
- I tried physical therapy.
- I tried acupuncture.
- I tried chiropractic.
I spent countless painful hours struggling with my shoulder. Multiple trips to the doctor, intensive physical therapy sessions, and countless anti-inflammatories. In the end, it felt like I was wasting my time, money, and health on ineffective exercises that gave me no results.
Weeks turned into months. I just couldn't do any of the things that I wanted to do. Doctors told me to just rest. I rested and rested …and rested. Within one year, my hands, wrists, and elbows were hurting too!
Months turned into years. I visited massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and physical therapists. From time to time, I’d get a few hours of relief. My shoulder would feel a little better for a while, but as soon as I went back to the computer or tried to play hockey, the shoulder would feel sloppy and unstable. It felt like the ball just wasn’t in the right place in the socket.
Even if the acupuncturist or massage therapist could get it to feel right, within hours I’d be back at square one. The aching would return. The popping would be there. The sense that my arm was just dangling kept coming back.
Sleeping on my side was out of the question, as the shoulder would give me a sharp pain deep in the socket along with a nauseating feeling of something being loose and clunky in the joint.
It’s unfortunately quite common for people to feel like what they have done in physical therapy, chiropractic, or massage wasn’t particularly helpful. A lot of times, conventional approaches to shoulder problems are based on avoidance. Everyone's REALLY afraid to hurt you more!
Of course you don't want to get hurt more...so they tell you to NOT MOVE until pain goes away. But if you're like me, you've found “rest, rest, rest” to be a really frustrating and fruitless approach.
A note about rest and shoulder pain...
It's a common misconception that rest will heal pain. Sometimes rest does help, but when months and years of rest don't lead to better function and less pain, it's time to start moving!
Historically, people with back pain were told to just rest in bed and wait for the back pain to go away. It took decades for the recommendations to change, but now doctors suggest moving to make sure your back muscles don't get stiff and weak!
It's no different with shoulders. The only way to improve your ability to move is to move!
But of course, not all types of movement will help. Conventional approaches to shoulder issues are often focused on doing the wrong things to the wrong parts of the shoulder — or they target the right parts of the shoulder but in an ineffective way! These approaches cause more harm than good!
EXAMPLE #1: GETTING THE WRONG MUSCLES TO RELAX!
If you take a look at many shoulder rehab protocols from reputable sources, you’ll find what I found: a lot of the exercises don’t feel good in the short term and don’t seem to do much in the long term.
This Pendulum exercise, for example, is one that seems to appear in nearly all physical therapy protocols for shoulder pain. I remember being told to do this exercise to help my shoulder.
It didn’t feel good then, and it didn’t do any good. It's not that I was a bad patient. It's not that I didn't do it.
The problem was, I was given a one-size-fits-all approach that worked out the wrong things! This exercise was making things less stable for me. Each time I did it, my shoulder felt WORSE.
EXAMPLE #2: IGNORING POSTURE — OR WORKING IT THE WRONG WAY!
Many programs also completely neglect the importance of the posture and alignment of the entire body — something that practically guarantees more shoulder pain in the long term.
Some programs do pay attention to posture, but then they often approach it with ineffective exercises.
Take this exercise for example. The idea behind an exercise like this is to “fix” your posture, but this doesn’t actually fix your posture! It completely misses the right muscles and can actually put your spine into a worse position and make your shoulders feel worse!
You aren’t alone. I’ve definitely felt that way. I've worked with a lot of clients who were CONVINCED that surgery was their LAST HOPE.
When everyone tells you that your shoulder pain will go away on its own and it doesn’t.
When you try everything to avoid surgery and nothing works.
...And then, when everyone tells you that your continued shoulder pain means it’s serious… and you need surgery…
It's really easy to start thinking that it’s the only path you have left.
I'm not a doctor.
I can't tell you with 100% certainty that you don't need surgery (some people MIGHT)...But I can share some stories and ideas that you may find very encouraging.
You saw an abbreviated version of Adam's story earlier, and I want to make sure you see the full story.
A friend referred me to Upright Health because my left shoulder was in a constant spasm and the fingers of my left hand were going numb. MRIs had indicated I had cervical spine pathology, and three different doctors I consulted with expected that surgery would be the only solution and there was not much else I could do.
Matt listened to the information the doctors had given me, understood my concerns, and presented me with a very different perspective from what I had already heard. What was most notable was that he had clearly already considered the other perspectives on my issues and had very well-reasoned notions about why the traditional perspectives may have arisen and how they may be misleading.
In the first session with Matt, there was an obvious improvement in my hand and neck symptoms. After a month or two I was feeling very good and no longer suffered the distraction of pain and numbness during my busy workdays.
I’ve been training with Matt since early 2016, and my neck and hand barely ever bother me anymore. This frees me to focus my mental energy on my work without worrying about whether my body is going to be the limiter in the productivity or enjoyment of any given day or week!
Adam's no slouch. He's the co-founder of Quora.com and was the former Chief Technology Officer of Facebook. He has access to some of the best medical minds the world has to offer.
Three doctors told him his only solution was surgery.
After a couple months, using the techniques and principles you’ll find in the Shoulder Fix, Adam experienced DRAMATIC and lasting relief from his shoulder and neck pain...
X-rays and MRIs can be really, really scary. When a doctor tells you that what you see in an X-ray is causing your problems, it’s natural to assume they know what they’re talking about. They ARE a doctor, after all.
But here’s the thing.
When you look into clinical studies on X-rays and MRIs for shoulder issues, you start to see something crazy. Just because an MRI or X-Ray shows a person has labral tears, odd bone shapes, rotator cuff tears, or arthritis…
Doesn’t mean they experience the symptoms or PAIN.
MRIs and X-Rays are amazing tools…but they have their limits!
And when you look at real cases of shoulder pain, you find that the MRIs don't tell you the full picture (check out the video for a striking example!)
Over the years, it has become common belief that rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and misshapen bones in the shoulder are the primary causes of shoulder pain...but a relentless army of recent, peer-reviewed medical research has shown this just isn’t true!
Early studies on orthopedic surgeries always paint a rosy picture. Once the surgeries are compared to other treatments, the results are not as great.
Surgery is usually presented as a practical solution to the problem. “Go into the body and directly fix what’s wrong.”
There’s just one problem.
Surgery is unpredictable. It’s simple on paper, but things are rarely so straightforward in real life. Some people get better, and others end up going back for one operation after another until their bodies just can’t take any more.
A study published by the National Institute of Health showed that out of a group of 154 patients who underwent total shoulder replacement surgery, 19.5% had to change their occupations because of the side effects of the surgery.
Studies have shown time and time again that surgery can be a unreliable solution, and that exercise can be just as effective.
Many times I considered going to a doctor to get surgery. But two things stopped me from doing that.
First, the American health care system was extremely expensive at the time (and still is at the time of writing), and I didn’t have insurance that would do much to help cover the cost of surgery.
The second problem was that I had trouble believing the surgery was going to fix me.
I knew a guy from my hockey team who had a bum shoulder. He had slammed into the boards multiple times over his career, and his shoulder was pretty unstable as a result. He was told a rotator cuff repair was his best option, so he went for it.
By the time I was thinking about surgery, he’d already undergone four revisions on that shoulder, and his shoulder still wasn't stable, secure, and healthy.
Another friend from high school also had some shoulder issues. He went in for shoulder surgery. When the smoke cleared, he couldn’t externally rotate at the shoulder joint. While his shoulder was more stable in general, he’d lost the ability to play sports.
Surgery didn't seem to be a good bet, so I kept searching for answers.
These diagnoses can get you feeling anxious, trapped, and resigned.
If you've got symptoms of any of these things, The Shoulder Fix can still help you retrain your shoulders for less pain, more comfort, and higher quality of life.
The secret to the Shoulder Fix is that it's designed to help you make principled decisions. That way you gradually improve your functional range of motion AND you don't hurt yourself doing exercises that strengthen or stretch the wrong muscles!
So, let’s talk about how it works.
Focus on the muscles - not the diagnosis!
Medical approaches often focus on "what's broken?" Medical investigation and treatment focuses on finding all the broken things and numbing them or "fixing" them. But, like we've seen, the X-rays and MRIs don't actually mean much! So a lot of times the wrong stuff gets "fixed"!
The Shoulder Fix focuses on one thing other programs neglect: teaching yourself how to target and retrain your muscles for careful, steady improvement.
Artist and Real User of the Shoulder Fix
I was ready to have surgery on my shoulder after four years of pain and not getting anywhere with the various methods I'd tried. My pain started out as a feeling of tearing in my upper right trapezius. It had come on gradually even though I hadn't had any accidents. I was ignoring the pain, and it wasn't going away.
Then, I slipped on some ice on my back step. I caught myself on my right hand as I fell, jamming my shoulder. That put me in so much pain I was forced to see a doctor. The doctor sent me to physical therapy, which helped me at least gain mobility and lessened the pain over time. I’m an artist, and I work on large canvases. Working with large pieces of art was painful. I spent a lot of time and money trying to learn to paint differently, and I wasn’t able to find an alternative. So, my work suffered along with my body.
After the initial physical therapy visits, I was getting better, but the pain was still always there. Over time it got worse. Several other physical therapists helped, but again, I was not able to restore the strength and mobility enough to get on with life.
I went to an orthopedic surgeon. He took an x-ray and told me they could go in and scrape off some of the bone to lessen the pain, but I could manage with P.T. until I was ready to have surgery. I decided to wait and just deal with the pain.
After another year or so, I couldn’t handle it anymore and thought I was ready to have surgery. When I was doing some reading online about what an MRI entails, I came across Matt’s Shoulder Fix program. That seemed to be an answer to my prayer. Since it was not a very expensive program, I thought I’d give it a try. It was worth a shot since I could see how it might work for me, and why not try it before spending thousands of dollars on surgery? Not to mention the pain and costs involved with recovery!
Within the first week of getting oriented to the program, I was already experiencing more strength and mobility just by doing the arm circles daily. I couldn’t believe how quickly that simple exercise gave me relief, and hope!
There are many exercises that Matt shows us in the videos. It can be overwhelming at first, but I just kept watching them and chose my eight or so exercises to perform by using his 'one of two' scenarios.
My scenario is that I do have good mobility, but little strength. This knowledge helped me to hone my program just for me.
I’ve been working at it for about four weeks now. I do the tissue work daily and perform the exercises on the days I don’t work out at my gym. And, by the way, I am gaining strength very quickly now because of this program. I had only been using very light weights at my workout. I always knew I was stronger than that and frustrated that I was so limited. But not anymore. Wow! I can’t wait to see my ability in a year from now!
I have so much more hope now than ever before. I still can have days when I overdo it, but then I just go back to more tissue work and take it easy with the weights. This method is working quicker than anything. My advice to you is to try this! It’s worth the small amount of money!
I am happy to say that I’m back painting with my favorite oil paints! My galleries will be happy to see my new work! Thank you, Matt!
Massage away chronic stiffness in muscles that mess with shoulder function.
Teach muscles how to handle new positions so you get full range of motion.
Give your muscles a chance to move the shoulder joint comfortably and through your full range of motion.
By sequencing the work you do with your own body, the Shoulder Fix helps you build a strong foundation for great shoulder function — for life!
On average, within a month of diligent application of our program, you should notice some obvious progress in the right direction. Most users see a dramatic change within three months. Retraining your shoulders out of pain is a process, so expect it to take a little time. If you are having trouble, now is the best time to start working on establishing better function.
While we would love to tell you something outrageously, incredibly fast, the answer is that it depends. Some people notice problems earlier than others and it takes less retraining of the muscles. Some people don’t stop to address their problems until they’re in severe pain. Some people have more time to work on their shoulders and don’t have as many bad habits with their shoulders. Some people have very little time to train their shoulders and spend long periods practicing bad habits with their shoulders. The key is really about establishing a balance of positive movements and exercises against the constant negative effects of daily life, and that can vary a lot.
If no positive changes take place in the first month, we definitely suggest you get in touch via the contact form below so we can offer some guidance in the right direction.
First and foremost, you should make sure you’ve had ample time to recover from your surgery and that your doctor has cleared you to exercise your shoulder through many different ranges of motion and to massage the muscles around the shoulder. If you have the okay from your medical team, you should be good to go.
It’s important that you be patient and careful as you go through the program. Surgery can affect your joint motion in ways we can’t possibly know or predict, so you’ll just need to be mindful as you try different exercises. Just make sure you never push through sharp pain, and if an exercise makes things obviously worse, move on to a different exercise or approach!
Just because you have a scary sounding diagnosis does not mean you cannot improve things drastically!
While all these medical diagnoses are often blamed as the cause for pain, these issues are commonly found in people with no pain. A lot of recent research seems to indicate that these diagnoses have little to no relationship with pain or movement problems.
For that reason (and many others), we encourage people to focus on dealing with the muscles and with restoring good movement patterns to reduce pain and discomfort. If you spend a lot of time working on that and you still run into roadblocks, then think about more drastic measures.
For some people, shoulder problems seem to stem from being too flexible. If that sounds like you, this program can still help your shoulders. You’ll be spending less time on flexibility work and more time on retraining stability and strength.

No, you don't. When you first start, you'll need very little equipment. You'll want to have a softball or lacrosse ball, a foam roller, an exercise band, and some light dumbbells. Over time, you may want to get a couple heavier dumbbells (up to about 25 pounds generally).
You can find these products in one place here.
Living with a shoulder that irritates day and night gets very frustrating.
After 15 years of all kinds of medical investigations and treatments... I had given up hope that someone or something could relieve me from that awful and nagging pain which also included an electric sensation from my neck to my shoulder and down to my fingertips.
My newly working shoulder gives me renewed energy and desire to pick up sports after such a long time of being unable to be active.
Above all, I enjoy having a good night’s rest.
Thanks so much!"
If you're like me, you've spent a lot of money already on a lot of different ways to fix your shoulder problem. Spending lots of time and money and getting little results is probably one of the most frustrating parts of dealing with shoulder pain. You get a quick fix, and then the problem comes back.
Then you're left wondering why things are going wrong over and over again!
Here's the reality: it's rare to find an amazing quick fix that lasts. You really need to know how to maintain good shoulder health for the rest of your life!
Your shoulders will feel their best when they are performing at their best!
They cannot perform at their best unless you TRAIN them to be their best!
Let’s face it. Getting pain-free can be costly.
When it comes to surgery — there’s all the pre- and post-op visits, plus physical therapy. In the U.S., the costs can easily add up to tens of thousands of dollars! And let’s not even get into the nightmare of health insurance and getting coverage.
Even if you opt out of surgery, physical trainers and therapists add up over time.
Looking back, I spent several thousand dollars over ten years trying to get my shoulder to feel better. Each appointment was an average of $75.
Every time I would get just a small taste of shoulder freedom, I'd lose it within a few hours or days. I'd get relief, then it'd disappear. I'd get relief...and it would disappear. It was the most frustrating thing I’ve ever experienced. I just wanted to get my shoulder feeling right!
That's why developing the Shoulder Fix was so important to me. This kind of treatment isn't accessible to everyone.
Normally when I work with clients in person, I walk through the exact same strategies and exercises you’ll find in your own copy of the Shoulder Fix. It costs them two hundred dollars…and that’s just the first session. I continue to partner with my clients until they’re happy with their results — typically a few months. It isn’t cheap.
There’s only one reason why they’re okay with that.
Because this program works.
They refer their friends and family, because it works.
The thing is, I know that kind of program is out many people’s price range. And I believe that lasting relief from chronic pain is something everyone should have access to.
That’s why I’m making the ENTIRE Shoulder Fix program available to you…For LESS than it costs to train with me for ONE HOUR.
$50-$250 / session ... around $1000-$5000 total
$500 - $20000 depending on the procedure, doctor, insurance, etc.
This program either helps you, or you get your money back so you can get the help you need. It’s that simple.
This is a systematic do-it-yourself program that will help you retrain muscles to move your shoulders better. This program will help you tailor your program for yourself and your own unique situation. Every effort has been made to think of and address the most common problems.
But I want to make sure you understand this...
If you’ve got something really complex, this program may not work for you. It is impossible to anticipate every possible quirk with the human body. You might have a very complicated, odd kind of compensation happening, so you might need more individualized help to make progress.
If you try this program for 30 days and don’t feel any benefit, just shoot over an email. If you're game, we will try to help you make some progress. If we can't help or you don't want help, we'll issue a prompt refund!
------AFTER ONE WEEK-----
I identified posture as an opportunity for a lifestyle change. I spend a good amount of time at a desk and definitely notice that my shoulders slouch. I have been actively engaged in improving my posture and performing periodic scapular retractions throughout the workday. Many exercises in the Shoulder Fix (at least in weeks 1-3) can be done around the office which is great...
When I first started the program just one week ago, I felt a disturbing internal motion in my injured left shoulder, kind of like a grinding. At this point, the grinding sensation is much reduced...
...I also feel significant improvement in endurance with the arm circle exercises. In tonight’s session I experimented with holding light weight-bags in each hand as I did the circles.
Another positive change is in sleep position. Going into the program, I avoided sleeping on my left shoulder. At this point, it is much improved and I can lay on my left side longer before it becomes uncomfortable.
------AFTER 4 MONTHS----
I’ve been utilizing the tools in the Shoulder Fix for a few months now and I’m back to swimming my normal five days/week. That’s really exciting and was frankly unthinkable when I first had the injury!
AND DON'T WORRY....
THERE ARE OVER 60 EXERCISE VIDEOS INCLUDED IN THIS PROGRAM SO YOU’LL KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT.
EACH AND EVERY EXERCISE HAS INSTRUCTIONS AND SETS AND REPS TO HELP YOU MAKE PROGRESS...
...JUST BECAUSE WE AREN'T IN THE ROOM WITH YOU DOESN'T MEAN WE CAN'T HELP YOU! :-)
"As a former college athlete and current over-stressed CEO of a construction company, my shoulders and hips were so out of whack that normal day to day activities were a challenge. My feet did not point in the same direction and I could barely pull my seat belt down in my car because my shoulder was so knotted up. Running was out of the question and my right shoulder would not let me do a number of overhead lifts. However, with no glaring acute injuries, I was prescribed mild physical therapy to address my issues.
Matt and the Upright Health team worked with me to identify where my body was unbalanced and out of line and then developed a custom plan of therapeutic massage, stretching and strength training that targeted my exact needs.
My time at Upright Health has brought me levels of comfort and mobility that I have not had in years. I can’t thank Matt and his team enough."
"So, briefly about myself, I am a 60-year-old physician, and if I can’t fix myself with non acute musculoskeletal issues, I don’t usually go to the doctor. I’ve been lucky enough to have sought out massage therapy, chiropractic treatment, and have gotten involved on my own with yoga, Alexander technique, and the Egoscue method.
My X-ray shows calcium deposits in my right shoulder, and I probably have tendinitis/ bursitis from an allopathic doctor’s point of view, but what I do with the position of my joints – taking care of relationships of joints and muscles and fascia – is what gives me the most benefit.
In the Shoulder Fix, I find the bent over arm circles to be very beneficial. And in starting the recalibration/strengthening section, I am starting with no weight/resistance, just to get used to the movements and do with correct form, and not hurt anything. Unfortunately, that has happened in the past with other exercise programs.
Unfortunately, like a lot of others, I am “too busy,” sit too much, am on the computer for eight hours a day at work…
But, in summary, when I can do the tissue work, stretches, and exercises regularly from the Shoulder Fix, I am fine!
Thanks for the program you have created!"
