When I first went to see Maryann I was in a lot of pain. I have scoliosis and have had multiple surgeries, including a lower back laminectomy due to degenerated and ruptured discs.

I’ve tried every treatment under the sun over the last 40 years and have never had lasting relief from my back pain…I’d tried everything from physical therapy to acupuncture to cranial sacral therapy and scores of other things…

After about 3 months into the program, one day I got up in the morning and did not have any pain.  It took me a while to come to that realization.  I was about to take my daily NSAID when I realized that I did not feel any pain!

Since then, I’ve done really well, except for those times when I allow my back to be over worked, such as when I traveled a lot or moved from one home to another.

I had severe back and sciatica pain for about 9 months. I spent thousands of dollars trying to get better. Physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, injections etc…. You name it and I tried it. It got to the point that my doctor said I would probably need surgery.

It’s been three months and I can say that I am pain free. I went back and told my doctor and PT what I did and they laughed at me. They didn’t think it was possible that my upper body posture could affect me that way. Boy were they wrong. All I know is that it worked for me and apparently for a lot of other people too. For years I’ve suffered from lower back pain. As a 38 year old man I would often wake up with a tightness and pain in my lumbar area.

One morning on my way into the office I twisted to pick up my work bag and completely threw out my back. I couldn’t even stand up or walk normally. I’ve been going to see Matt for chronic back and leg pain. I bought a sleep number bed over 12 years ago to try to help the back pain….I’ve been to the doctor and he gave me pain killers and anti inflammatory medicine, the pain just kept coming back….Went to the chiropractor often and got relief for a few days at a time…….Went to the massage therapist and got relief for a day or two. I tore a disc in my lumbar spine in December 2009 and had nerve blocks, epidurals, pain killers, PT, acupuncture, swimming, massage therapy and Pilates out in the DC area for seven months and still couldn’t be out of the house for more than two hours, sit for more than 30 minutes or even walk my dog.

I moved out to San Diego in August 2010 and found an excellent Pilates instructor who enabled me to be out of the house for several hours without using excessive pills.  My instructor told me that I was so bound up that if I wanted fast results I needed to see a Rolfer who specialized in Egoscue to ensure that I would stay loose and properly aligned.  She knew Matt b/c one of her other clients saw him, but I was a little skeptical at first b/c Egoscue seemed like a new age PT regime.

My goal when I saw Matt in late September 2010 was to dance at my wedding and that gave him two weeks. He had me use the Tower for practically all our first three sessions while he worked on my hip flexers, psoas, and shoulders.  By the way, very painful if you’re unaccustomed to true deep tissue work.  He gave me plenty of exercises to do and I’ll be honest at first I was doing every single one of them twice a day, but then I wanted more sleep, so I slacked off, BUT I did dance at my wedding.

If you want someone who will make you feel like you’re getting pampered, don’t see Matt go to a spa.  If, however, you want to get better and feel better, then please go see Matt.

I’ve been working as a dentist for nine years. As a dentist, I’ve been suffering from poor posture and twisting of my body as a result of long hours of work. Not only was I discouraged about how my posture was getting worse, but I also noticed pain in my upper back and the heels of my feet. I am an avid runner and had been dealing with plantar fascitis for a few years.

In February, 2010, I sustained a 60% compression fracture of one of my thoracic vertebrae.  As I began to recover, I seriously questioned whether I would ever be able to run a mile again, much less a full marathon.  I’m not saying that it happened immediately, but it’s now October of 2010 and I can run 26 miles again.  Matt taught me ways of redistributing my weight so that I didn’t injure my spine again.

I came to Upright Health with some lower back pain and Matt recognized that there were some foundational issues to be corrected. He gave me some easy-to-follow exercises to do on my own which have made a world of difference. Not only did my back pain clear up, but my whole body has felt healthier and better aligned.
